Our routeOn this safari we often go off the beaten track. Many of the areas visited do not have the infrastructure that you are accustomed to in Europe. Please take the itinerary from the map below.

Durban to Johannesburg in 16 daysSouth Africa, land of unrivalled beauty, unique wildlife and interesting cultures, is one of the last destinations in the world where true wilderness areas can still be found. With its 250 mammals and 800 different bird species and its incomparable flora it will leave you with unique impressions.
This tour endeavours to show you some of the best game reserves in South Africa and focuses on the flora and fauna, which we explore on foot and from our safari vehicle. We overnight in luxurious bush camps in remote locations. We explore the African wildlife in Kruger National Park, in the Mkuze and Umfolozi/Hluhluwe Game Reserves. We hike through the incredible scenery of the Drakensberg and Swaziland and also get the opportunity to visit local people to learn about their fascinating culture and magnificent traditions. An extraordinary travel experience for nature-lovers!

Day 1: DurbanArrival in Durban, the seaside resort capital of South Africa. We venture towards the breathtaking scenery of the Drakensberg. Here we visit the Giant’s Castle Game reserve, with its majestic mountains, many bird species like the bearded and cape vulture and animals like chacma baboons, blesbok and eland, the largest antelope in Africa.
Day 2: Giant's Castle Nature ReserveThe whole day is spent exploring the incredible scenery of the Drakensberg, the highest mountain range in Southern Africa. We hike along a clear mountain stream and through an indigenous forest to some of the caves that were used by the San people. At Main Cave we will have the opportunity to learn about the life and the rock art of the indigenous people of Africa.

Day 3: St. Lucia WetlandsA long drive brings us to the St. Lucia wetlands, a world heritage site along the east coast. Our accommodation here is situated near the sea. We have time to explore the reserve on foot and on game drives. This is a birder’s paradise as sea- and freshwater birds occur here in huge numbers. Furthermore this unique area is known for its many crocodiles, hippos and a variety of antelopes.
Day 4: St. Lucia Today we take a boat ride on the lagoon to see fish eagle, pelicans, flamingos, goliath heron and might even be lucky enough to see the rare palmnut vulture.

Day 5 & 6: Umfolozi Nature ReserveThis in 1895 established park is the oldest in South Africa. In this beautifully situated reserve we will have the opportunity to spot the endangered white rhinoceros. The reserve is known to have the highest density of these magnificent animals in the world. Other rare animals to be seen here are lion, leopard, cheetah, buffalo and a wide variety of antelopes and birds. Two game walks a day can be undertaken with an armed ranger, a unique way to explore the African bush.

Day 7 & 8: Hluhluwe Nature ReserveWe spend the next 2 days in Hluhluwe Nature Reserve, which is linked to Umfolozi by a corridor. The two parks together measure about 96000 ha and habitats here range from woodland and forest to savannah and grassland. We explore the wildlife near the water holes, enjoy game drives as well as game walks with licensed rangers. Besides the „Big 5“ many other well-known bushveld species inhabit the park, offering visitors a great game viewing experience.
Day 9 & 10: Mkuzi-ReserveThe remote Mkuze game reserve is one of the jewels of the reserves in Natal. Here we will have the opportunity to observe animals such as black and white rhinoceros, kudu, nyala and giraffe from one of the numerous hides, which are situated throughout the reserve next to the water holes. Again two game walks a day can be undertaken with an armed ranger.
Day 11: Kingdom of SwazilandSwaziland is a small kingdom, which became independent of England in 1968. We spend an afternoon exploring the Hlane Game Reserve in the Swaziland Lowveld. Here various interesting species of birds can be found on a walk.

Days 12 – 15: Kruger National ParkOne of the many highlights will be our 4 day visit to Kruger National Park – one of the most famous game parks in Africa. Kruger National Park is well known for its diversity of habitats and wildlife and offers an excellent opportunity to experience close encounters with elephants, rhinos, buffalos, zebras and giraffes. Lion, leopard, wild dog, cheetah and a variety of other predators also occur here. With close to 150 mammals and over 380 species of indigenous trees, as well as over 500 bird species, this is a paradise for the wildlife enthusiast and we will take a lot of time observing the many different species on our game drives. We concentrate on the area in the south and centre of the park that is known to have the best game viewing with the highest variety of animals in the park.
Day 16: End of the tourWe enjoy our last sunrise in Africa and make our way through forests and mountain passes to Johannesburg. Our trip ends with the arrival at the airport.
